Roman and Dennis form a connection through the shared loss of a twin.
This witty dark comedy speaks to companionship and the continuous ache of loneliness — disconnection in a time of over connectedness. It’s a film that understands the millennial and Gen Z condition: surrounded by people, but still searching for someone who you can be yourself around and who really gets you.
Dylan O’Brien, aka Stiles for the Teen Wolf fans, has been relatively MIA since leading The Maze Runner trilogy. He resurfaces with his usual charm but sheds the teen-throb light his fan base characterized him by, asking them to grow with him as an actor – and it pays off.
O’Brien’s brief turn as the character Rocky, with a stock type ‘camp-cent’ persona, stops short of being offensively unoriginal. However, it ultimately served as a clever contrast to his more small-town, gruff and unrefined portrayal of Roman – the character we follow for the bulk of the film, a man wrestling with grief, isolation and regret after the sudden death of his twin brother.
Writer-director James Sweeney who also co-stars in Twinless and delivers a straight-faced comedy that never misses. His humour is dry, his dialogue razor-sharp, and beneath it all lies a loneliness that is familiar.
Whilst highlighting a loneliness endemic amongst young people, this movie still manages to be laugh out loud funny.
