In someways I did really well this month. In the ways it counts I did abhorrently.

Judge me mercilessly.

All I can say for the movies I watched this month, is that fortunately I watched enough to make up the four pictures I needed below.

Venom
A Star is Born
What Happened to Monday
Boyz n the Hood

In the same pathetic vein, I didn’t get a chance to start many new shows this month. However I did finish off or completely bail on a few so that’s something.

Started
Insatiable (Netflix)
The Flash
(Season 5)
Grey’s Anatomy (Season 15)
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix)

Finished
Press (BBC One)
Vanity Fair (ITV One)
Somewhere Between (Netflix)

Ongoing
A Discovery of Witches [Quit]
Gilmore Girls (Season 3) [Re-watch]
Castle (Season 6)

Because I did so poorly on the movie front this month I thought I would also throw in some bonus mentions for you, and of course show off how cultured I am, as this month I also happened to catch three musicals.

Wicked – Though I have seen this before, it’s been just over ten years since, so I thought – why the heck not. Unfortuantley I probably should have basked in nostalgia as I didn’t find it as enjoyable this time around – I blame the performance, it just wasn’t as magical with all those off-key notes.

Heathers The Musical – Literally the best thing ever. I loved the original cult classic movie and so even though I’d heard mixed reviews thought I’d see this as a bit of fun. I loved it. It was funny, the performers were amazing and three weeks later I still have the soundtrack playing in my head. It’s playing until November 24th at Theatre Royal Haymarket if you get the chance.

42nd – Tap dancing in as a last minute edition to the list (literally saw this one last night) and starring Bonnie Langford (Eastenders… and I’m sure many more accredited shows), I went into this one blind. To be honest as loved as I am told 42nd Street is, personally I though there was no real story – all the threads that began to weave themselves into something tangible very quickly frayed. You see this show for the tap. And in that respect I was left dazzled and envious.

My favourite of the month was…. Heathers The Musical. Sorry not sorry for everyone who was expecting me to say A Star is Born. It was completely out there, took the essence of the original movie and turned it into something entirely its own. I have a soft spot for things that shouldn’t work, but still somehow do and Heather The Musical definitely fits that category.

Over on Letterboxd I write a few lines in review for every movie, not just the ones I see in cinema if you want to check those out.

Least you forget I happen to also be an avid reader, and this month I was focused on Books by Black Authors in literary celebration of Black History Month in the UK.

American Street by Ibi Zoboi
Pride Ibi Zoboi
Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
The Poet X by by Elizabeth Acevedo
Calling My Name by Liara Tamani
Miles Morales by Jason Reynolds
White Teeth by Zadie Smith

My favourite novel of the month was American Street by Ibi Zoboi. It was a really authentic mix of Haitian Culture and Western Society and though told through a younger characters eyes, the themes and the problems weren’t any less effective nor sympathetic.

Check out my Goodreads for reviews and such.

Roll on November.

  1. Great article!

I actually just started watching The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I’m on episode 3. It took a minute to get into the series, but definitely liking it. How was Somewhere in Between? I wanted to watch that at some point, seems interesting.

I am a Theater Dork, so that’s so awesome you got to see some shows! I actually saw Wicked like right after it opened on Broadway years ago and than again about a year later. Wonder if a movie version will ever get made one of these days.

    1. I agree – Sabrina definitely took some warming up (maybe because the Melissa Joan Hart version is so beloved/known?) but by the end I was left wanting more.

Somewhere Between is not great – however it’s still a decent watch if you have the time to waste and you occasionally don’t mind watching terrible shows lol.

That movie has been on the pipeline for years and years but here’s hoping it will be one day soon. Love the theatre, I find that it’s a quiet hobby – you never know that anyone is into it until it randomly comes up in conversation.

Glad you enjoyed the post ^_^

      1. Yeah, I liked the 1st episode of Sabrina, but I thought it was just okay. Which I was surprised at. I kind of think I compared it a bit at first to Riverdale which I liked right away from the start. I’m on episode 6 now and I officially really like this series now. It’s really good.

Is Somewhere in Between like bad bad, or bad that you can still watch and like be like this ridiculous and so bad it’s kind of good? LoL.

Oh yeah, I am a complete Theater Dork. This current Broadway season is so good. I get kind of overwhelmed when so many shows are coming cause I want to see like everything, LoL.

Have you seen Dirty Dancing, Hadestown, or the Tina Turner musical in London?

      2. Somewhere Between is a watchable bad lool to be honest the storyline is pretty good, and there are a number of twists, but mostly it’s the characters you get annoyed at in the first few episodes.

I haven’t seen any of those musicals in London – might try and see Tina Turner, and 9 to 5 comes out next year which I’m looking forward to.
