January 2026
My monthly film and television round up, from new releases to overdue catch-ups.
Film (Cinema)

H is For Hawk
Claire Foy is a Cambridge professor dealing with the sudden death of her father.
A forgettable British drama despite the very obvious falcon in the room. Read my full review here.

The Testament of Ann Lee
Amanda Seyfried embodies the founder of the Shakers: the forgotten religious sect that rose in the 18th Century.
Full review coming in February.

28 Days Later: The Bone Temple
A new chapter in the 28 Days Later franchise.
I didn’t watch the recent 28 Years Later (and I don’t recall Days and Months) so a large chunk of the premise was lost on me. Some great cinematography though.
Film (At Home)
Memories of Murder
A string of murders confound the local police.
It’s my fault for watching this with sky-high expectations.

Tron: Ares
A continuation of the cult 80s classic franchise.
I’m not saying Jared Leto made it worse, I’m saying that between the lazy tropes and rushed character development it was already bad.
The visual effects were great though.

Other films from the couch this January:
Trap (Rewatch): Josh Harnett is a smiling psychopath and a great father.
Monkey Man (Rewatch): Dev Patel is a ruthless vigilante and class warrior.
Uptown Girls: Dakota Fanning at her best.
Lisa Frankenstein: Cole Sprouse at his worst.

Television

Harlan Coben’s Run Away
A father’s search for his daughter becomes fervent when her boyfriend is found dead.
James Nesbit is I for Infuriating, but this over-dramatic series serves its purpose as a bingeable start to the year and the dénouement makes it worth it.

His & Hers
An estranged couple suspect one another when a string of murders befall their town.
Ironically I wished this was slightly more Coben-esque. It lagged in places, but I overlooked it because Tessa Thompson and her silk blouses can do no wrong in my eyes.

The Lady’s Companion
Miss Bianda is tasked with finding the eldest Mencía daughter a husband…
This saccharine washed Spanish-Language romantic-comedy balanced genre conventionality and originality with fabulous form.

True Detective (Season 1)
Two detectives investigate what looks like a ritualistic murder.
As usual, I’m 10 years late to the party. I’m only a few episodes in but damn McConaughey can act.

Red Eye (Season 2)
The clock is ticking once again for Detective Hana Li who has to catch a killer before a plane lands.
They did a good job of maintaining the premise without making it repetitive. I found it infuriating that they slapped a “not everyone likes my methods” plaster over what was basically insubordination.
What have you been watching and recommending in January?
