Jennifer Lawrence gives us a psychological spiral with no centre.

Directed by Lynne Ramsey and based on the eponymous novel, Die My Love aims for raw psychological portraiture, but gives up around pyrotechnic aesthetics and 2010s YA nostalgic casting. The film follows Grace (Jennifer Lawrence) who spirals into madness – a descent played with unnerving commitment by J Law – but the emotional suffering often lands on the audience rather than the character.

The film’s central psychological thread felt muddled. There are strong hints of postnatal depression, but Grace’s behaviours seem to predate motherhood. Grace’s highs and lows felt normalised by her selfish one-dimensional partner Jackson (Robert Patterson), who often overlooked her ‘quirks’ even when it left him digging a grave.

Despite flashes of intensity the film struggles to communicate what it wants us to feel, making it difficult to connect beyond the surface.
