When Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) decided to slip on that red suit one Christmas, he really should have read the small print.

I thought I would bring a festive feel to this months trilogy review with an old favourite. Well I say favourite, and when I do I specifically mean the first Santa Clause movie which is a staple in my house at this time of the year. In all honesty I haven’t seen the other two in a great many years – and I’m not even 100% sure I’ve seen The Santa Clause 3 at all.
From least favourite to most….
The Santa Clause 3 (2/5)
The Escape Clause, brings in Jack Frost (Martin Short) who is jealous of Santa’s attention and wants the fluffy white beard and that red coat for himself. Santa has to deal with the in-laws and a new arrival to the Claus family on top of Jacks meddling.
Though it has the same rating as The Santa Clause 2, this movie just felt a little all over the place, and took ages to get to one of the more interesting parts of the story…. which then only lasted for about five minutes.
The Santa Clause 2 (2/5)
A good follow up to the first movie and the whole Mrs Clause element was a nice twist. It’s an okay watch, but it’s pretty meh, both as a movie and as a Christmas movie. That whole Santa Dictator Toy bit was just a little jarring in all honesty and you feel more interested in Scott getting to know Carol (Elizabeth Mitchell) which feels like it takes place in the blink of an eye. Then again one has to remember it’s not a rom com, it is a children’s movie.
The Santa Clause (4/5)
This is a festive four star rating, the lines are a little blurred this time of the year especially when nostalgia comes into play – that being said the original Santa Clause movie is a fantastic concept and movie in general. Tim Allen is hilarious, the situation just escalates, and his son Charlie (Eric Lloyd) is just the sweetest high pitched floppy haired 90s kid. The Santa Clause is a must for December.
Overall I want to just say start and end with The Santa Clause and you can’t go amiss! It carries the weight of the rating below, and though the sequels weren’t as good it still has the ability to put you in that magical Christmas mood – it is Santa after all.
