It’s that time again: MONTHLY FAVOURITES. Succinct favourites across my consumption of film, television and novels, as well as what I’ve been up to creatively.
FILM 🍿
I watched quite a hodgepodge of movies in November, from a couple of Christmas movies to a re-watch of the Indiana Jones movies. In all of that there was only one stand out – MANGROVE the first instalment in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe anthology.
What I enjoyed about it was its Britishness, specifically in its historical context. Black History is pretty much ignored in the UK and this felt like a start in the depiction of (fingers crossed) more stories and snippets of life to come.
TELEVISION 📺
I finally came to the end of my saga with LAS CHICAS DEL CABLE aka THE CABLE GIRLS and let’s just say, that at this point it’s been two weeks and I’m still not over that ending.
It was a wild and unexpected ride and I loved the characters, their journeys, and just being able to experience all of that in Spanish (with English subtitles).
I’ll definitely miss my Cable Girls.
DOCUMENTARY OF THE MONTH 🎥
I had intended to watch something else entirely but when I saw that ITV had done a one-off documentary MCFLY: ALL ABOUT US I couldn’t say no. It was a lot of fun, nostalgic and emotional and definitely one for the fans – which I am. The doc reminded me how different British celebrities are from their American counterparts because the McFly boys – men – are still just as funny and adorable as they always have been, and that was just nice to remember.
BOOK 📖
I absolutely failed in life when it came to reading in November. In that, I didn’t finish a single book. No seriously this a first for the year but not entirely unexpected as November is always a bit crazy for me with NaNoWriMo. In other years I’d be able to get some reading done on my commute – but those are out of the window for the time being so.
Looking forward to making it up to myself in December. Wish me luck.
OTHER ⌨️
Might as well mention this one first – finished my 6th year of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month for those who don’t know), and though the novel I started isn’t finished there’s only a handful of chapters left to be written. This time around I’m going to actively try to make sure I edit my novel as this is always the intention, but new ideas somehow always take over.
I honestly blame NaNoWriMo for all the things I don’t get done in November… and I am okay with that. I just about managed four articles on medium this month, my favourite being, I SEE MYSELF IN TIM ALLEN’S MIKE BAXTER, so have a read.
