It’s that time again: MONTHLY FAVOURITES. Succinct favourites across my consumption of film, television and novels, as well as what I’ve been up to creatively.
FILM 🍿
I know I should probably say Tenet but I’m just going to go with BACK TO THE FUTURE TRILOGY on this one. I had a much needed day off and just watched all three movies back to back and it was fun to just be wrapped up in the straight forward timey-wimey antics of Marty and the Doc. It’s been such a long time since I’ve seen these movies too so the memory lane aspect factored into the trilogy booting Tenet from my monthly favourite.
Don’t get me wrong, Tenet was….. something, so feel free to read my full review after you’ve finished perusing my favourites.
TELEVISION 📺
Shout out to me who finally caught up with Hunters (I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought it was but yay for Logan Lerman), The Umbrella Academy season two (a nice, violent and enjoyable follow-up), and started Little Fires Everywhere, (before my Amazon Firestick started acting up). but when it came to my favourite – STUMPTOWN wins hands down. Cobie Smolders is an absolute badass as Dex Perious ex-Army vet turned Private Detective with a PTSD and a drinking problem. The show is fun has a host of very distinct characters including Michael Ealy and Jake Johnson. So far the series hasn’t been renewed for a second series.
DOCUMENTARY OF THE MONTH 🎥
We all know by now that I never arrive at the party on time. I am months late if I’m lucky but more frequently it’s years. That’s a long introduction to me admitting that I have only just watched THREE IDENTICAL STRANGERS. Don’t come for me because I know the documentary has a whole load of accolades under its belt but… MEH. The most interesting part for me was the discovery of not just one brother but two. When it led down towards the ‘sinister’ path of it being part of a psychological study it felt incredibly hollow because the finding remainder unpublished and the man at the helm of it all had died. Maybe when part two comes in 2066 after the research documents have been unsealed I’ll feel some sense of understanding/completion to the story.
BOOK 📖
Of the five books I read this month (humbly dropping that one in there) my favourite is VENOM BY JENNIFER ESTEP, which acts as the third book in the Elemental Assassins series. It wasn’t that this book particularly blew me out of the water, it was more that I had a lot riding on it. I’m looking for a long-running book series that I can pick up and dive into when I have a lull in my other books. The Urban Fantasy series as of 2019 has eighteen books. Thankfully Venom tipped in my favour by getting rid of an irritating character and opening up the playing field and raising the stakes for the protagonist Gin.
OTHER ⌨️
Ahhh! I’m almost almost almost finished the written draft of the feature film script I’m working on. A slow but steady process. Fingers crossed I’ll be done a week after this post comes out. Other than writing and a little gardening, it’s been pretty quiet on the creative front for me, but I have ideas and plans tinkering away in the back of my mind that I’m hoping to make a little more physical in September.
Content has been a little light on Medium this month as other commitments took president, but for my fellow writers who might be interested, I wrote the following article: Choosing the Best Format For Your Story.
