Eccentric inventor Doctor Emmet Brown, ‘Doc’ (Christopher Lloyd) has invented a time machine in the shape of a Delorian. With it, he and teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) use it to travel backwards and forwards in time as they attempt to observe and rectify changes made to their timeline in a wild ride adventure that takes place at 88mph.

Back To The Future Part I (1985), Back To The Future Part II (1989), & Back To The Future Part III (1990)
Back To The Future Part III (2.5/5)
The third and final part in the franchise was without a doubt my least favourite. It was a good twist to have Doc get stuck in the Wild West – an era he had once mentioned he would love to visit. My issue with this movie is that essentially nothing happens – well nothing interesting. At this point the troupes we had come to expect and enjoy felt overdone. Seeing Michael J. Fox playing an ancestor as well as himself, and a rendition of Biff being an asshole.
That being said, even though we have no idea how Doc made a flying steam train it was a good round-up and reminder that the future is ours for the making.
Back To The Future Part II (3/5)
This movie was the most dynamic of the three and kept you on your toes as it explored more viscerally the consequences of messing with the past and its effects on your future.
We’re not going to discuss how Biff knew how to use the time machine in the first place, but it elevated the importance of his character who became more active where formerly he was nothing more than a plot turning antagonist.
Another thing that I really enjoyed was how Part II overlapped with the end of its predecessor. Sure the original actress who played Jennifer was changed but it was a nice little touch that they replicated the ending scenes of Part I. This coupled with how present Marty McFly had to watch and avoid his past self in the past so he wouldn’t affect the future was bananas.
It’s pretty depressing to watch this in 2020 and see how those in 1989 imagined 2015 would be. I’m thankful that we have better taste in clothes but I damn sure would love a hoverboard.
Back To The Future Part I (3.5/5)
The OG.
The simplicity of Back To The Future makes up a big part of its charm. Insert Influx Capacitator here, enter the date you want to go there, add a speed limit and bang. Time Travel. There’s nothing complicated or over-explained about it which means you have more time to just enjoy the adventure.
The comparisons between Marty’s parents and Biff in the present, the past, and the new present were all done incredibly well and shows how a small action can impact the way you think for the rest of your life. What we need to discuss is Biff’s consistent misogyny and the casualness of rape culture depicted in this movie, but we’ll save that one for another post.
Finally, the idea of going back in time, screwing up your parents’ meet-cute, and potentially erasing your own existence – it’s timeless and easy to watch and enjoy time and time again.
I thoroughly enjoyed this rewatch, more so because I happened to knock all three movies out over a day. It’s probably been more than ten years since I’ve seen this series and I had forgotten a lot of what happened in Parts II and III, so it was like seeing it all again for the first time. Back To The Future reignited my passion for time travel and now I need to fill that hole with something else, so suggestions are more than welcome.
