A group of centuries-old protectors are being hunted down in the hopes their genetics can be analysed and be humanities saviour – for a price.

The Old Guard

Before I pressed play I hadn’t watched the trailer for The Old Guard, the name sounded cool and we’re lacking many new movie options at the moment. Not only that but I’m not the biggest Charlize Theron fan, and so I didn’t want to be put off from watching the first new movie I’d seen in months.

This movie however surprised and delighted in a multitude of ways. The characters all worked together in perfect synchronicity (I mean you would hope so, them being besties for so long), and it just… worked. The way the came back to life, the anticipation of them doing so, the apprehension of big pharma chasing them and also this one fight scene in a church. It was backed perfectly with soundtrack consisting of dubstep with a hint of classical really encompassing the crux of the movie’s title. Beautiful.

Something quite interesting is how predictable the movie was for me…. and how it didn’t stop my enjoyment. The characters were unique and fun, there were some impressive pieces of Score, and the fight sequences were action-packed enough to dispel my usual annoyances.

Also, there was something nice about having actors that you semi-recognised from their other works. Of course, we all know Chiwetel Ejiofor and Charlize Theron by name but Kiki Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Matthias Schoenaerts etc I recognised by face but had to do a cheeky Google.

A questionable aspect of the movie is how unexplained things were. It didn’t bother me too much but it did niggle at a part of my brain when newbie Nile (Kiki Layne) asked about… well anything. Why they are so special, how it all worked, the shared dreams etc. and Andy’s answer to all the above was basically a one thousand-year-old, one-shouldered shrug.

If you are into action, lore and Charlize Theron then this movie will undoubtedly be for you. Even if you just like two out of three; you’ll still enjoy The Old Guard.

  1. For me it was just…okay. It’s the kind of movie I call An Entertaining Time Wasting. Which is perfectly okay if that’s all you want. I suspect that if it weren’t for the star power of Charlize Theron and Chiwetel Ejiofor and the novelty of an action/comic book movie being directed by a black woman (Gina Prince-Bythewood) the movie wouldn’t be getting anywhere near the attention it’s enjoying.

Or it could just be that in a summer where we can’t go to the theater for our Action Movie fix, we have to get excited about what we’ve got.
