A Movie a day in the Month of May
Day 18 pick
Though I believe I gave this movie 2.5/5 on Letterboxd, the more I think about it the more I realise I should probably take off that .5.
Sorry To Bother You tells the story of Cash, who becomes really good at telemarketing with the help of his ‘white voice’. From there he gets a promotion to ‘Power Caller’ position, much to the disgust of his fiance Detroit, and fellow workers.
The movie is (I believe) about selling out, the necessity of code-switching in order to progress, how the system works people like horses, capitalism is slavery and how the white man will always win despite the immorality of their behaviour.
Not only did this movie escalate from being about one thing to then being about three or four other things, I feel like it made light of serious issues whilst simultaneously going pretty deep on the lighter ones. I couldn’t decide if I should be laughing or be offended but more often than not the marker landed on the latter.
I did enjoy the almost comic-book element and how you had to be paying attention to what was going on in the background in order to understand the subplot. From what I could make out of it I liked the idea of where the movie was going, Lakeith Stanfield was cool and Tessa Thompson is always an absolute dream.
A weird satirical, ‘comedy’ that I think missed the poignancy that it could have achieved even if it was done in the same style.
Keep up with every ‘A Movie a day in the Month of May’ pick on Letterboxd and Twitter
