New edition to le blog: MONTHLY FAVOURITES. I am swapping out my monthly wrap-up posts for a more succinct favourite pick spanning across my consumption of film, television and novels, as well as what I’ve been up to creatively.
FILM 🍿
So there are a whole list of movies that didn’t end up coming out in cinema – because the cinema’s are closed and the country is in ‘lockdown’, and I for one am mourning missing out on Mulan and Misbehaviour this month. What I did manage to watch and thoroughly enjoy however is BATMAN: UNDER THE RED HOOD which is part of the DC Animated Universe. It’s great because we get to see Jason Todd and his transformation into Red Hood, as well as also having Nightwing swoop in too – glorious! Not to mention a Black Mask that goes to show how pitiful Ewan McGregor’s version in Birds of Prey was. Also the Joker in this movie rivals the one in Killing Joke as my favourite rendition of the villain thus far.
TELEVISION 📺
I have two favourites and I can’t be judged because I make the rules here. First is THE SPLIT series two which showed on BBC One. I won’t delve too much into it because there’s a whole review, but it’s been weeks and the series is still on my mind.
The second is over on Netflix and has been on my watch list since it came out in 2018: NICKY JAM: EL GANADOR which is the thirteen episode autobiographical series about Puerto Rican Reggaeton artist Nicky Jam who you may recognise from his role in Bad Boys for Life. It plots his rise to fame, his spiral to rock bottom due to addiction, his life in America as a child and the issues with his mother. It could be because I was already a Nicky Jam fan and love the language, culture and music but it was such an unfiltered journey that you couldn’t help but route for his redemption… even though you know that everything works out for him in the end.
This month I managed to get through a lot of series of which I am very happy with – I’m perpetually behind so it’s nice to feel like I’m catching up.
DOCUMENTARY OF THE MONTH 🎥
SHE DID THAT on Netflix which looks at successful black business women in America. Those building their business and those who reached success and the struggles they faced on their way there. In all honesty I didn’t find the documentary particularly interesting to watch. The format was pretty dull, and except for a few facts that were given at the beginning, I didn’t feel like I learnt anything, which was a shame.
BOOK 📖
This month I’m going with the third book in Rachel Cain’s Stillhouse Lake series, WOLFHUNTER RIVER. If you’re into thrillers then I highly recommend this series that follows the wife of a convicted serial killer, as she fights to protect herself and her family from the world who believes she is guilty of being ‘Marvin’s Little Helper’. Truly chilling, and fast paced. Even if you’re not into the genre I find the subject so psychologically riveting.
OTHER ⌨️
Another month and another short film written. I’m attempting to write one a month, no more than ten pages to try and work on scaling back when it comes to putting words down on a page. In other news I did some editing for the web series. We have an unfinished episode that I’d still like to release so I spent a week playing around with the footage in Adobe Premiere Pro.
