New edition to le blog: MONTHLY FAVOURITES. I am swapping out my monthly wrap-up posts for a more succinct favourite pick spanning across my consumption of film, television and novels, as well as what I’ve been up to creatively.

FILM 🍿

JOJO RABBIT – that’s it. That’s the favourite. I know I’m yonks late to the party but it was so bloody adorable and funny and it’s really the only movie I remember watching this month. No contest.

TELEVISION 📺

I finished my annual(ish) re-watch of Avatar: The Last Airbender – which also coincidentally celebrated the fifteen year anniversary of the first episode in February. My favourite series of the month is a toss up between THE STRANGER and THE WITCHER, and how can you really compare the two?! At first it was hands down going to be The Stranger, because Richard Armitage, and also the storylines managed to keep you hooked throughout the eight episodes. Which was surprising becuase I won’t lie; British shows sometimes struggle with longevity.

However, now I think about it I’m going to go with The Witcher. What swayed it for me was the unexplained way time worked within the series. You just had to be switched on to realise that essentially there were three timelines playing over one another. As we know I love when shows make the audience work for it.

DOCUMENTARY OF THE MONTH 🎥

This months documentary was the four part KILLER INSIDE: THE MIND OF AARON HERNANDEZ on Netflix. Chosen for my love of American Football, there was a lot to be learnt in the way of the long term medical implications of the game. Of course that wasn’t the main premise of the documentary. More so than anything I found it so chilling how normal Hernandez sounded throughout it all. I know he (probably) did it, but his complete composure throughout made you question if it wasn’t a complete misunderstanding…. crazy.

BOOK 📖

Once again I only managed to read a very miserable three books this month and of the three I have to say that STATION ELEVEN BY EMILY ST. JOHN MANDE stuck with me the most. A really explosive intro, followed by a winding albeit a little slow tale of the end of the modern world, centred around people whose lives were connected by the smallest of threads, but interesting coincidence. The premise sounds like it would be a lot more intense than it actually was: though perhaps the oddly mirroring events with our very real Coronavirus problem gave it some added juice.

OTHER ⌨️

Three episodes of my web series phase two have been released with a decent viewership so yay. I also managed to finish the first draft of two short films and plotted a feature I’ve been tinkering with in my head – so not too shabby on the writing front this month.
