The Karate Kid
“All right, so what are the rules here?”
“Don’t know. First time you, first time me.”

The Why
Honestly, I was looking for something else. However, when I scrolled past The Karate Kid I remembered that I used to watch it frequently… Mostly because it was one of those Channel 5 Sunday afternoon movies that was always on. To be honest I couldn’t remember much of the storyline beyond the infamous “Wax on, Wax off” and thought why not refresh my memory.

The Rewatch
A part of me wishes that I had left this one in memory lane.

Loved the 80’s vibe of the movie, and Mr Miyagi is still an absolute legend, but I won’t lie; it was a bit of a boring movie.

Things took so bloody long to progress and I just kept thinking of how it could have been edited down from a 2hour and 2minute movie to 1hour and 40minutes.

Also the storyline was just crazy – how did a kid who only knew a few karate moves that he learned at the Y make it to the finals of a championship match… with only six weeks training! This really made me laugh once I deeped it – and I know it’s just a movie but it’s one of those little things that doesn’t occur to you as a child but is glaringly obvious with your adult eyes.

Admittedly it was nice to sit and rewatch the movie, but I doubt it’s one that I will pull back out. Now excuse me while I go off and practice my crane kicks.

  1. It’s such a quintessential 80s movie, including the leveling up through montage. Have you watched any of the Cobra Kai show on YouTube?

    1. It’s definitely a beloved classic, even though I didn’t click with it during the rewatch. No I haven’t heard of Cobra Kai, what is it about?

      1. Johnny reopens Cobra Kai thirty years later, which reignites his rivalry with Daniel. It still has a lot of 80s sensibility, but it’s set in the current day, which is pretty entertaining. I started watching for the nostalgia factor, and ended up binge watching both seasons.

      2. I watched the first half of S1 Ep1 and I can’t believe the two reprised their role! Definitely intrigued enough to watch all the free episodes they have. Thanks for the reccomendation!
