Liar Liar
“Ummm that was incredible. Was it good for you?”
“I’ve had better.”

The Why

I admit this wasn’t my first choice for this month’s Rewatched but I couldn’t get my hands on my others. When I scrolled passed Liar, Liar on Netflix, however, I had a sudden flash of an elevator scene and realised, as I couldn’t remember much more than that, I was due for a rewatch.

The Rewatch

Can I first off start by saying how much I appreciate the succinctness of 90’s comedy movies both in plot and running time? A well-known lawyer and class A liar whose sons birthday wish restricts his ability to lie for 24hours – 86minutes. For me, this cap stopped the slapstick comedy from getting too stale.

On slapstick comedy – this is normally something that really annoys me to the point that I can’t watch. Though there was a moment during a bathroom scene that I had to avert my eyes, there is something about Jim Carrey that makes the exaggerated actions more tolerable.

Though of course the movie is about and centred around Carrey’s character; Fletcher Reede, shout out to Justin Cooper who plays his son Max Reede. He was the classic mop-haired little boy with cheeks you just want to pinch. Almost indistinguishable from the likes of Eric Lloyd (Dunston Checks In) and Travis Tedford (The Little Rascals), his character added an easy but necessary air of sympathy and truth to the movie that I miss these days.

Did I mention that Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) was in this movie? That was an enjoyable surprise.

I loved that 90’s feel and the simplicity of the movie as well as (for the most part) the stereotypical characters. If nothing else, it just makes me feel incredibly nostalgic. On that note it also just made me want to dive in with both feet and dust off a few of Jim Carrey’s comedy classics.
