It’s not everyday walk into a bank with rubber masks repping ex-presidents and guns blazing – sometimes think outside of the box. Perhaps use the weather to your advantage – maybe try pulling off the perfect hurricane heist.

The Hurricane Heist, Toby Kebbell

The worst storm in twenty five years is set to hit and in a small town residents are either evacuating or strapping themselves in for what is sure to be a bumpy ride.

While civilians are filling bunkers with canned goods, the treasury facility located nearby is filling up on millions – six hundred to be exact. It’s an irresistible sum and a team of rouge operatives plan to use the storms chaos to their advantage in stealing it.

In charge of keeping the money secure is Casey (Maggie Grace), and with a point to prove she would protect the money with her life if need be.

Having suffered a personal tragedy at the hands of the last storm, brothers Will (Toby Kebbell) and Breeze (Ryan Kwanten) plan to stay clear of its predecessor. But fate has other plans.

After a storm comes a rainbow, but first you need to make it through alive.

The Hurricane Heist, Ryan Kwanten

Steal a tonne of money right under the governments nose, using a Category 5 storm as both a means of cover and escape. It’s so simple it just might work. And it did.

Hurricane Heist didn’t try to be something it wasn’t. It worked in the simplicity of its plot and you really can’t argue with that.

The storm was used as more than background noise or a time keeping devise, it played an active part in the movie based on its temperaments, and thorough the characters – namely when it came to fighting the bad guys.

Personally I found the scenes where fights took place in the storm the most enjoyable to watch. The characters used the tempest to their advantage which raised the stakes and made events all the more thrilling.

So here’s my problem…. Hurricane Heist wasn’t unwatchable. It had some original moments and did in fact have me at the edge of my seat once or twice.

And yet, except for the less than tolerable Southern accents, I can’t quite put my finger on what it was that ultimately made it so… less than meh.

If you have any ideas, please share with the class because for the life of me I’m stuck.

The Hurricane Heist

Reiterating my earlier point; I like the whole Hurricane / Heist aspect and wouldn’t mind seeing what else could be conjured up, (The Earthquake Embezzle?, The Flood Finagle?).

Sure there are only so many disaster based heist movies you can do before it starts getting even more ridiculous… yet a tiny perverse part of me wants to find that line.

Hurricane Heist was an okay movie that lacked a certain je ne sais quoi to make it recommendable or memorable.

  1. I liked the big weather action scenes too, but the rest of the movie is dumb in the worst way. The dialogue is just plain awful. I summed up my thoughts in my review: “it’s an idiotic, uninspired waste of time. It’s stupid but not nearly as stupid as it needs to be in order to be fun.” I really wanted to like this but wow, was it bad!

    1. You’re right, the dialogue (the accents) and the overall exaggeratedness of a situation we didn’t really care about did it no favours… Loved those weather scenes though lol
